The shiitake, also known as shii-take or pasania mushroom, is a mushroom from the Omphalotaceae family. It is one of the oldest medicinal mushrooms in Asia and was originally classified under the Knight's relatives or the Stielporling-likes. The Japanese name shiitake means “mushroom that grows on the pasania tree”.
In China it is called Tung Koo and has stood for the healing power of mushrooms for centuries. Pharmacological studies have shown that shiitake contains various ingredients for the prevention or treatment of various diseases.
